First inspired by the effects of color and light around me, I used watercolor to express what I saw.  Over time I have been increasingly drawn to the mysteries and inventions possible with abstraction. Painting with encaustic (wax and resin with pigment) lends depth and new possibilities to my work.  It can be transparent or translucent, provide fully saturated color, be textural or smooth, and allows for collaged elements. The surface appearance of the wax is seductively appealing.

I continue to find inspiration in both abstract and observed subject matter.  Generally I will focus on one of those areas for a period of time, allowing me to explore, for example, a technique or set of images. I believe that each type of painting complements and informs the other.
